Minimalist Ceramic Design and Architecturally Inspired Forms

For all who are interested in modernist or minimalist design, or who just like nice clean lines, this course is for you.

We will explore the connection between architecture and ceramics, taking inspiration from Brutalism and its bold and dynamic forms, using both throwing and handbuilding techniques.

This course will focus on minimalist ceramic design, exploring how you can develop your practice and create exciting new work. Tim will lead you through his design process, focusing on his research on the connection between architecture and ceramics. In this course, we will reimagine both thrown and handmade forms, guiding you to develop your own creative process resulting in bold ceramic designs. These small groups sessions will include discussing and sharing ideas, advice on how to plan and develop ideas, one on one tuition, as well as technical guidance and support. This course caters for both hand-builders and throwers with plenty on individual attention to realise your intentions.

“In recent years there has been a renewed appreciation for Brutalist architecture, with its distinct aesthetics filtering into various areas of contemporary design. Ceramic artists such as Derek Wilson, Andrew Walker and Karen Rennicke have all been inspired by this post-war Modernist movement. Together we will explore processes developed by these artists, as well as my own research and practice, to experiment with new methods, shapes and design. For example, the “cut and paste” technique – where forms are altered and reorganised by subtraction and addition – will be a key tool for us along the way. While outcomes can be functional or sculptural, you will focus on Modernist construction, minimalist design, and the joy and versatility of our material – clay!”

This course is for the creative novice, the experienced ceramicist and those looking to expand their skills beyond craft-based pottery. Over the course of 5 weeks, participants will be encouraged to develop their own creative process and explore new and different ways of working. If you are looking to experiment with form and structure, this workshop is for you.

This course is open to adults (18+). The cost includes instruction and the items you make to take home. Refreshments and drinks are also included.

This course is led by Tim Fluck.
