Painting Flowers using Underglaze

Illustrator Jane Tattersfield introduces students to painting floral designs using underglaze.

This workshop is an ideal introduction to working with underglaze on ceramics.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Jane Tattersfield has a lifelong passion of working with colour & pattern. Her unique, vibrant & intricately decorative style hints at influences from India, South America, textile, folk & ancient art.

Jane grew up in London & studied illustration at Kingston. In her 3rd year of Art School she was commissioned by Collins Publishers to illustrate the covers for all of Shakespeare’s plays in a series aimed at the teenage market. This was the starting point to her career and led to commissions from other publishers, magazines, graphic design & greeting card companies. She went on to specialise in children’s books, and television work, in particular with Channel 4.

She produced a series of oil paintings inspired by ancient myths and the cycle of nature. After several exhibitions Jane brought out a range of products which includes greetings cards, prints, tea towels & cushions under the name Tattersfield Designs, which now sell in shops across the UK and overseas.

The workshop begins with an overview of underglaze properties, application and different glazing effects, along with a demonstration of how to draw various flower forms and create a balanced composition.

We will explore brush techniques, colour mixing and layering to achieve depth and detail. Using reference materials, design and sketch your own floral compositions before transferring them onto bisque-fired tiles or plates.

A guided demonstration will cover core painting methods, including line work, petal and leaf strokes, shading, and building colour through multiple layers. Jane will give guidance while participants spend focused time painting, refining work and adding details, while receiving individual feedback and support.
