We have an exciting new Saggar firing workshop lin We have an exciting new Saggar firing workshop lined up for 3 & 4 July, which Helen Ashton will be hosting at the studio.
This two-part workshop is a perfect experience for anyone who likes fire, fun, experimentation and a little jeopardy!
The finished pots have unique and striking markings, distinctive and gentle, with layered moments of warm earthy tones. The outcome cannot be predicted but with the blessing of the fire gods we can provide a little nudge with our choices of combustibles!
THE FRIDAY EVENING SESSION
We will make our own clay saggars around each pot; adding oxides, salts, sawdust and other combustible materials to the pot’s surface. Save your banana skins, seaweed, string or coffee grounds as they can all go in.
While the firing is underway we will enjoy a pizza supper and beverages in the courtyard on this Summer’s evening.
THE SATURDAY SESSION
We will find our saggar parcels amongst the now cooled barrel fire ashes, carefully unwrapping them to reveal the magic. Then give the finished pieces a polish to bring out the accents further and discuss the results over a coffee or tea, and cake.
Places are filling fast, so head over to our website theclay.studio and find this workshop on our calendar page for more info and booking.

Our next outdoor firing full day workshop is Naked Our next outdoor firing full day workshop is Naked Raku!
It’s the pots that are naked, not the potters, in case you were slightly alarmed by the title. 😄
But why naked?
A layer of resist slip is applied to bisque pots, then coated with glaze and fired to around 950C. The pots are then placed into a fiery reduction chamber. The slip adheres to the glaze, cracks and breaks apart during the firing. This layer is then chipped off when the pots cool, revealing black and white contrasting marks on the “naked” clay surface.
There is a real excitement that comes from the fragile balance between control and uncertainty.
Each participant can bring their own bisqueware (max 4) or can choose from a selection which will be provided – see full specifications and pricing on the website.
