Our second Glaze with Confidence three-part course Our second Glaze with Confidence three-part course with Louisa Taylor has just completed and the first sesssion involved this lovely practical exercise: Capturing the sensitive qualities of a feather using glaze pencils and oxides on bisque tiles. A blissful couple of hours. What a treat. Louisa will be back with us on Sunday 6th December for a fantastic full-day workshop on how to make and develop your own glazes: Understanding Glaze. We are delighted to have Maya joining us to lead t We are delighted to have Maya joining us to lead two throwing workshops this Autumn. @mayapask This one will be looking closely at shaping small rounded bud vases and learning how to section off a consistent amount of clay each time, so each pot is similar in size. We will break down the sections of this form, lifting the clay to the correct thickness, coning in the neck, shaping the curve and undercutting the pot so that it requires as minimal trimming as possible, or even better, no trimming at all. These pots encompass a great variety of technical elements as well as the unique process of ‘throwing off the hump’ and also leaving room for individuality. Today marks the 10th Anniversary 🎉 of The Clay Stu Today marks the 10th Anniversary 🎉 of The Clay Studio! Can you believe it? Ten years since we first opened the doors for classes at our original site at Hendal Farm in Groombridge. Eunice, Helen and Susana were the original team tutoring in those early days, followed by Lara shortly after. It was a smaller space than where we are now, but we hold it with great affection. Many of you have been with us since that first year! We were thinking up themes and projects for our students back then, as we still do each term now. Who remembers the teapots challenge? Eighty-five marvellous examples made. We celebrated them with an open day and invited our pottery friends Freya, Clover and Caroline to judge the results. What fun! A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey with us. We’re incredibly grateful for the support, enthusiasm and encouragement we’ve received over the years, and we’re immensely proud to see so much wonderful pottery made at the studio being enjoyed in homes far and wide. xx

A cup of tea always tastes better when you’ve made A cup of tea always tastes better when you’ve made the vessel yourself! This creative tea set perfectly demonstrates how you can create functional pieces that you’ll love using.
You may have seen the reel we shared a few days ag You may have seen the reel we shared a few days ago showing Kerrie’s @kerriekent.art @goldheartedclub latest work, which will be a feature in her first solo show ‘Awaken’, taking place @grovegallerytw 17-30 Sept. Cracks can happen, sometimes suddenly, and due to a number of reasons. So much love and work had gone into this piece we knew we had to try and save it for Kerrie. Susana @susanagarciaceramics spent some time working on the repair to give it the best chance in the kiln. Glad to say it worked wonders. The piece is now out of both firings and is fantastic. All will be revealed soon. Here’s our method for repairing greenware cracks that have already dried out. Take the same dry clay as the item to be repaired (in this case Crank), and break up in small bits, then mix with white vinegar to form a paste. Using a paint brush, dab vinegar onto the split cracks to moisten the place of mending. Score and scratch well, then gently fill the cracks with the paste. A knife is the best tool here, easing it in to make the surface look good. Using a kidney and knife scrape and fill a few times. Once the surface is finished, cover with cling film for a few days. Keep checking to see if the crack has re appeared. If it has, then repeat the process. Have you tried this method? Let us know what you think.
