Throwing for Improvers
A new three-session throwing course for those who wish to improve their skills on the wheel.
This three session short course provides a perfect progression for anyone who has attended one of our Beginner Throwing courses. Also suitable for throwers who have grasped the basics and feel confident centering and pulling-up basic cylinder shapes.
This course is led by Helen, and runs on consecutive Sundays for 3 hours each session.
COURSE OUTLINE
This course will provide concentrated steps to develop technique and confidence.
Whether you need further support to throw the perfect cylinder, troubleshoot your techniques, or wish to explore tackling specific shapes , this course is open and adaptable to your experience level and areas of interest.
You will be free to work on your own, with guided support and will be given a short weekly technical demonstration by the tutor to breakdown methods which you can then replicate. You will be encouraged to examine your throwing throughout, cutting some pieces in half to examine consistency of wall thickness and maximum use of the clay.
Session 1: Throwing repeat cylinders with increasing weights of clay. Collaring in and necks.
Session 2: Throwing on bats, creating shapes with intention.
Session 3: Choose four pieces from weeks 1 and 2 to trim. Apply simple handles if desired, apply slip brush strokes, carve patterns or leave smooth.
At the end of the course, your four favourite pieces will be taken forward for bisque firing. These will then glazed by your tutor and final fired for you to collect in approx. three weeks.
