VACANCY

Pottery Tutor – Part-time

The Clay Studio is a busy, friendly and well-established pottery teaching studio at Barnsgate Manor in East Sussex. We are situated in a beautiful rural location on The Ashdown Forest.

We run regular weekly classes, courses and workshops for everyone from complete beginners to experienced potters.

We are looking for an experienced pottery tutor to join our friendly team at our vibrant and busy teaching studio.

You ideally need to be able to drive as we are set in a rural location between Uckfield and Crowborough. However, there is a bus service (Tunbridge Wells to Brighton) that stops at the front gate.

The Role

We are looking for an accomplished potter who also enjoys teaching and helping other people develop their skills. You will teach a mixture of regular classes and workshops, working with students of different ages and abilities.

Depending on your experience, this may include:

  • Wheel throwing
  • Hand-building
  • Glazing and decoration
  • Beginner and improver courses
  • Developing individual student projects
  • Workshops and one-off sessions
  • One-to-one tuition

We value individual attention, so our teachers need to be able to demonstrate techniques clearly, recognise what each student needs and provide plenty of encouragement along the way.

Candidate requirements

  • Strong practical pottery skills and substantial experience working with clay
  • Previous experience teaching pottery
  • Confidence teaching complete beginners as well as more experienced students
  • Good communication skills and an approachable, encouraging manner
  • Patience and enthusiasm for helping others learn
  • Good reliability and organisation
  • A willingness to work as part of our teaching team

Knowledge of glazing, firing and kiln operation would also be beneficial.

Beyond teaching

The Clay Studio is a working studio, and our tutors are involved in keeping the studio running smoothly. This includes preparing and clearing the studio, looking after equipment, helping with students’ work and maintaining a clean, organised and welcoming environment.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who fits naturally into the character and culture of The Clay Studio. We want our students to feel relaxed, supported and encouraged, and we look for teachers who genuinely enjoy creating that experience.

Working arrangements

This is a part-time, freelance position, with teaching offered according to our programme and your availability. There may be opportunities for regular weekly classes as well as additional workshops and one-off sessions.

Renumeration: Hourly rate, dependent on experience and responsibilities.

To Apply

If you are an experienced potter who enjoys sharing your skills and would like to be part of The Clay Studio, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please send us a brief CV, details of your teaching experience and, if available, examples of your ceramic work.
