Explore Design on Clay, a morning workshop on Saturday 28 February with Lara Gorlach, at The Clay Studio. Make a plate using a mould and coasters or tiles, then decorate to your heart’s content using our wide range of coloured clay slips and paper-resist.

Join us for an exciting evening of Obvara! This an Join us for an exciting evening of Obvara! This ancient low firing Raku technique is a process for all the senses. 
Bisque fired pots are heated in a Raku kiln to around 1000 deg C and once glowing orange are plunged into the fermented Obvara brew, then dipped in cold water to halt the process. It’s fast, magical and the results can be spectacular!
Workshop Date: Friday 20th March
Time: 6-9pm
Bring three of your own bisque pieces or choose from a selection we provide.

Such a fun technique, which can also be combined with decoration methods at bisque stage such as adding underglaze pencil or wax resist.

Any clean, leftover raw clay used by students is carefully processed and returned to life as smooth, reusable clay, ready for the next creation.

Evoking winter hues and textures, reminding us how Evoking winter hues and textures, reminding us how inspiring the Ashdown Forest landscape is around us. Copper brackens, purplish silver birch, dried grasses and silhouetted pines. Our lovely toasty buff and crank clays really accentuate these natural tones. 
All these beautiful pieces were made by our students during weekly classes. 🙌
Matilda Grover joins us in a couple of weeks to le Matilda Grover joins us in a couple of weeks to lead her two day Basketry workshop where participants can learn how to make this beautiful basket. Here’s a glimpse of how she does it. Very relaxing to watch. Always lovely to see traditional craft processes. Beautiful items made to last.

Last week’s episode of The Great Pottery Throwdown Last week’s episode of The Great Pottery Throwdown @potterythrow – Animal Sculpture week; reminded us of the fantastic two-day workshop held at the studio with Sussex-based ceramic artist Jack Durling @jackdurlingceramics – we even spotted one of his inspiring pieces on the show. 
Here’s a little look back at some of the animals made during that workshop and their finished form. All wonderful, I’m sure you’d agree. 🙌

Whether you are a complete novice with clay or looking to experiment with pattern this is a great way to explore the options of working with coloured slip and paper resist.

His surname is Keys and these were gifts for his two daughters for them to keep their keys on, so it’s keys for Keys!
