Three bottles: A still life
Join guest artist Kate Semple for an immersive workshop studying form to hand-build a harmonious trio of bottles.
Learn how Kate creates emotive vessels, reminiscent of an artist’s still life, thinking about how the forms interact and the shadows they create.
YOUR TUTOR: Kate Semple
Kate’s primary interest is in the humble VESSEL, whether sculpting with stoneware clay or paper and card. Her vessels in both mediums share the same aesthetic whilst also celebrating the contrast between surface texture. Her work is intuitive, often capturing a mood or atmosphere, representing an idea like a sketch pinned on a wall.
WORKSHOP OUTLINE
We will begin by sketching out our desired forms once we have rolled out slabs of clay to make them with. Then, as we work on the construction of our bottles, we will be looking at how different proportions, necks and fluted tops can create a varied and complimentary group. Simple decoration can be added at the final stage by drawing fluid lines, stripes or textures into the raw clay with sgraffito tools.
