Pinching with Porcelain

A 3-hour workshop for those who wish to explore the unique properties of porcelain through the technique of pinching.

Learn the technique of pinching using porcelain to make small cups or salt and pepper dishes with Elaine Sheppard Bolt.

You will have an opportunity to work with Elaine to explore the unique properties of porcelain, trying the apparently simple but sometimes deceptively demanding technique of pinching. Porcelain behaves in unique ways when worked in the hand, offering new challenges but also providing a beautiful finished surface. We will work with white and coloured porcelain to make small cups or salt and pepper dishes, and either add a handle or or make holes for you to later add wire handles after firing.

Elaine will bring examples of her pinched porcelain cups and dishes, she will discuss the unique properties and challenges of porcelain and demonstrate various techniques for working with it working by hand.

Your work will be fired and a clear glaze applied to the inside of the pot, allowing the soft porcelain surface to remain on the outside. Your pinched pieces can be picked up a few weeks later.

The workshop is suitable for beginners and also those with more experience. These workshops are open to adults (18+), and the cost includes instruction, materials, and the pieces you make.

This workshop is led by guest ceramicist Elaine Sheppard Bolt.
